Over the past three years, Y2K has defined Gen Z’s style, turned the catwalk into a time machine, and dominated everything from film to beauty. From low-rise jeans, and baby tees to mini skirts, items that remind us of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in the 2000s are “storming” Instagram and TikTok.

This trend is loved by the sexy “lack of fabric” on the slim body of young, stylish girls. However, when the 2023 BSTs are released one by one, Y2K is gradually showing signs of slowing down and leaving the peak. It’s time to ask the question: Which trend will be revived to “succeed” Y2K?

Going back to the period from 2006 to 2013, girls dressed in Indie Sleaze style are said to be genuine “dancers” at outdoor music festivals. Singer Sky Ferreira used to be the “poster” face for this trend. The mix of the dusty “Hipster” look, a bit of 80s flash and the messy layering like the ’90s Grunge make the Indie Sleaze signature.

This is also a style deeply attached to Indie music and party culture. Almost a decade on, it’s not surprising that Indie Sleaze has risen to the top of the trending wheel’s waiting list. Be a trendsetter with checkered shirts, leather jackets, patterned sweaters, loafers, or vintage boots.

“Located” in the 2000s, the Barbie doll cosplay trend that was promoted by Paris Hilton in her 20s is marking its return in recent times. If in the past, Bimbo was like a label of “blonde hair, the short brain”, now, the style of “dumb blonde” on the screen has become an affirmation of feminism and positivity of the female body.

From Hollywood stars like Kim Kardashian, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, etc. to the stylish IT Girl, everyone is fascinated by the sweet but bold image of the Bimbocore style. The trend of wearing pink as the main color combined with Y2K elements such as low-rise pants, jeans skirts, and platform shoes is increasingly capturing the hearts of young people.

Originating from the rock culture of Emo in the 80s, Emo had its heyday in the late 90s with the style of wearing black clothes and thorny male motifs. Although born around the same time, Emo did not receive the same enthusiastic response as Y2K, perhaps due to the limited color and spirit that this style brings.

“Rock Princess” Avril Lavigne is one of the few people who are loyal to the Emo style until now. Different from the dark features in the early stages, Emo is gradually showing a change in its appearance when influenced by Gothcore and Dark Academia, bringing a more luxurious and sexy look.

In stark contrast to Indie Sleaze, Twee has the image of a bright, well-rounded, and somewhat naive girl. If Y2K has been associated with Instagram and TikTok in recent years, Twee, along with Indie Sleaze, is the style that dominated Tumblr in the 2010s.

Peplum tops, Peter Pan collar shirts, pearl necklaces, flared skirts, etc. are typical images when it comes to Twee style. Recently, this trend is being talked about on TikTok, hashtag #Twee has reached 111 million views. Twee is actively warming up for her comeback when designer Virginie Viard recently put those heartwarming mixes into BTS CHANEL Fall-Winter 2022.
