Richard Mille brings the smiley logo to the RM 88 Automatic Tourbillon Smiley. This timepiece is limited to 50 pieces globally, with a new automatic self-winding in-house CRMT7 tourbillon movement.

Smile is a universal and multi-valued connection method in society. In 1972, the smiley yellow smiley face appeared in the French newspaper France Soir and immediately became a fever. Smiley always conveys positive energy. Now, this symbol of connection is brought to life by Richard Mille in the vividly emotional world of the RM 88 Automatic Tourbillon Smiley.

Driving this timepiece is the self-winding in-house CRMT7 tourbillon movement. Richard Mille spent three years developing the movement. Each decorative element that makes up the CRMT embodies the spirit of fun in Smiley’s world: blooming flowers, warm sunbeams, sweet pineapples, growing cacti, flamingos, cocktails, and rainbows brilliant.

Sculptor Olivier Kuhn creates micro-works out of gold. They weigh less than 1 gram. The process of assembling the movement should not have any errors, even the smallest. At the same time, these tiny parts must withstand all kinds of shocks.

The smiley face symbol is the heart of the watch. From there, the artist must determine how to place other decorative symbols around the smiley face in a three-dimensional space. Textures bring visual effects but at the same time create favorable conditions for the installation of the movement.

As a result, RM 88 is equipped with two base plates. A technical plate supports the movement. An auxiliary plate to secure the trim on the left side of the dial.

The new in-house movement CRMT7 features an exposed design, displaying hours, minutes, and clock functions. The bridges and baseplates are crafted from grade 5 titanium. The tourbillon support bridge is finished in micro-blowing, beveled, and complex dual PVD plating in black and gold.

The second hand is located between two weather states: rainy and sunny. With each passing minute, the hand rotates through the ARCAP ® alloy magnetic cloud, fixed to the tourbillon movement and hidden under a small cloud of white gold. There is also a vivid rainbow, crafted from four types of gold with different finishing techniques. This process requires 25 hours of continuous work by the artisans.

Smiley’s smiley face is micro-blown and covered with yellow gold. They sparkle with matte reflections thanks to the hand-glazed technique, which contrasts with the anthracite gray rhodium finish.
