To reach the US Open semifinals, Khachanov defeats Kyrgios

For the first time in his career, Karen Khachanov has advanced to the US Open semifinals after defeating Nick Kyrgios in a match of huge serves early on Wednesday morning. The 27th seed survived 31 aces and loud crowd support for his opponent in a match that was devoid of atmosphere in the first half and overflowing with it in the second half.

I awaited my opportunities. They are also things I made. I’m overjoyed and extremely proud of myself for finishing the game and winning. Serving in a game is never simple. Simply put, I’m overjoyed to have taken this step towards reaching my first semi-final.

Khachanov overcame a difficult journey to the semifinals by defeating Montreal winner Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets in the fourth round. In addition, he needed four sets to defeat Thiago Monteiro in the second round and Denis Kudla in the first. Prior to Jack Draper’s injury-induced retirement in the third round, he was likewise poised for a fourth or fifth setter.

Khachanov has climbed 13 spots to No. 18 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings during the competition. If he wins the competition, he might move up to No. 11 depending on other outcomes.

Kyrgios ascended to No. 19 in the live standings during the tournament to overtake Alex de Minaur as the highest-ranked Australian. He concluded the tournament with 116 aces and a tour-leading 27 victories since the start of the grass season.
