To reach the US Open semifinals, Khachanov defeats Kyrgios

For the first time in his career, Karen Khachanov has advanced to the US Open semifinals after defeating Nick Kyrgios in a match of huge serves early on Wednesday morning. The 27th seed survived 31 aces and loud crowd support for his opponent in a match that was devoid of atmosphere in the first half and overflowing with it in the second half.

He eventually won 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4 in three hours and 39 minutes after earlier coming within two points of victory in the fourth set.
Khachanov, who himself racked up 30 aces, moves on to face Casper Ruud of Norway, who has a chance to end the tournament atop the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
“I finished! “I did it,” exclaimed Khachanov. “I’m really pleased with myself; I maintained my concentration throughout.
Even though it was a tough match, I was prepared to fight and play five sets.
The opening two sets were dominated by big serving, and Kyrgios’ uncommon lack of fervor left the spectators with little to cheer about. The New York crowd, though, found its voice as the players started to play longer rallies beginning in the third set, especially when Kyrgios controlled the fourth-set tie-break to force a deciding.
At the start of the fifth game, the Australian dropped serve, but Khachanov remained steadfast all the way to the end. Kyrgios only converted two of his nine break chances, while Khachanov converted four of his opening six break point opportunities (4/8 for the match).
In his post-game press conference, Khachanov said, “From the beginning to the end, excellent performance. At least I will tell you about myself, from my side. I remained there. I awaited my opportunities. They are also things I made. I’m overjoyed and extremely proud of myself for finishing the game and winning. Serving in a game is never simple. Simply put, I’m overjoyed to have taken this step towards reaching my first semi-final.
Khachanov overcame a difficult journey to the semifinals by defeating Montreal winner Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets in the fourth round. In addition, he needed four sets to defeat Thiago Monteiro in the second round and Denis Kudla in the first. Prior to Jack Draper’s injury-induced retirement in the third round, he was likewise poised for a fourth or fifth setter.
Khachanov has climbed 13 spots to No. 18 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings during the competition. If he wins the competition, he might move up to No. 11 depending on other outcomes.
Kyrgios ascended to No. 19 in the live standings during the tournament to overtake Alex de Minaur as the highest-ranked Australian. He concluded the tournament with 116 aces and a tour-leading 27 victories since the start of the grass season.
“Obviously, I’m in shock. But Karen deserves full credit. He is a warrior. He is a fighter. In his post-match press conference, Kyrgios stated, “I thought his serving was extremely fantastic tonight. “Honestly, I think the server I used in this tournament was the finest. the manner in which, while under pressure, he hit his marks. He simply played the crucial moments brilliantly.
There wasn’t much in it, really. Obviously, I’m devastated. Just the sense that you were either going to win big or nothing at all. I currently feel as though I have failed this event. That is how it appears.
