Nadal before the opportunity to go down in world tennis history
At 3:30 pm this afternoon (January 30), the final of the men’s singles Australian Open 2022 will take place between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. This will be an important match for both players as they will reach a new milestone in their careers if they win.
For Nadal, the 2022 Australian Open men’s singles championship will help him own the 21st major title to become the athlete with the most Grand Slam titles in world tennis history.
Meanwhile, Medvedev will rise to the number one position in the world if he beats Nadal. He also became the first player to win a second Grand Slam title right after his first if he won at Melbourne Park.
To reach the final, Nadal had to go through difficult times before Denis Shapovalov (quarter-final) and Matteo Berrettini (semi-final). Meanwhile, Medvedev’s journey to the final this year was more difficult than last year. He had to play four sets against Nick Kyrgios and Maxime Cressy, come back and save the match point to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime, before knocking out Tsitsipas in the semifinals.
The match between Nadal and Medvedev is forecasted to be very tense and it is not excluded that the two players will need 5 sets to determine the winner.
Earlier on the evening of January 29, world number one Ashleigh Barty defeated Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6 to win the women’s singles title.
