The movie Cruella excellently overcame four heavyweights , Cyrano , Dune , Nightmare Alley and West Side Story to win the Best Costume Design award at this Oscar 2022.

During her Oscars speech, Jenny Baevan said she once intended to turn down the Cruella project . “Glad I didn’t,” Beavan continued. “The only reason I agree is because Clare Spragge, who’s sitting down there, said she would assist as a costume supervisor. And will bring her team, the most trendy, creative, smart, generous and amazing members.”

Baevan also thanked the hair and makeup team as well as the actors. She felt that Emma Stone’s cheerfulness and charismatic performance increased the appeal of the costumes she designed.

The 11-time Oscar-nominated designer has worked hard to create unique, soulful outfits for the actors in the movie Cruella . She created 47 costumes for Emma Stone’s character and more than 30 for Emma Thompson’s character.

The live-action film Cruella received a “rain of praise” from critics. Cruella ‘s content revolves around the darkening process of young Estella de Vil, who later becomes the evil Cruella de Vil (played by Emma Stone). This is a prequel to the popular animated film 101 Dalmatians .

Jenny Baevan draws inspiration from the environment to ideas from famous fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior… All are cleverly put into Cruella ‘s costumes, highlighting the character’s personality.

If the fashion of the character Baroness von Hellman (played by Emma Thompson) is aristocratic, somewhat old, the fashion highlight of Estella (Emma Stone) is a breakthrough, daring, rebellious.

Through this award, Baevan also speaks out for the designer community. She wore a quirky tuxedo and drew a dove with the words “Naked without us”. This is a protest message from the Association of Costume Designers movement. They are fighting to be paid commensurate with the effort and value they put in.
