Why breathing sea breeze is good for your health and spirit

Is sea breeze good for health? This question is a matter of contention between my two parents. One person said that the sea breeze is “poisonous”, easily causing colds and colds in the lungs. The other person insists that the sea breeze is very good for health because the smell of ozone, when inhaled, will bring good effects to the body. Because of this, resorts are often built close to the sea to make the most of the fresh sea air.

If you do a Google search on the health effects of sea breezes, questions like “is sea breeze good” and “is sea breeze toxic” get a lot of searches. So what exactly is the answer? Let’s find out with Harper’s Bazaar.

Our atmosphere is made up of 78% nitrogen and 20% oxygen. These oxygen molecules are made up of two oxygen atoms bonded together. But there is also another form of oxygen called ozone – with three oxygen atoms bonded together.

The smell of ozone was first noted around power plants in 1785. In fact, it was made of three oxygen atoms in 1872. Ozone has gained popularity over the past few decades due to the phenomenon. ozone layer hole.

In the stratosphere about 8–30 km above the ground, ozone protects us from ultraviolet radiation. But below ground level, high levels of ozone can irritate eyes and mucous membranes. There is no reliable information that ozone gas occurs close to the sea surface. It may have been assumed by many that ozone had an extra oxygen atom, and therefore would be more beneficial than the ordinary oxygen molecules in the air.

Ozone smells like very dilute chlorine. And at the beach you can sometimes smell like this. Perhaps this similarity has led to the hypothesis that ozone near the sea is good for health.

So does sea breeze contain ozone? Reality is not so. Professor Andrew Johnson from the University of East Anglia says that the signature smell we smell by the sea is not ozone, but Dimethyl Sulphide . And it is not necessary to inhale this gas to have a good effect on health. Professor Johnson discovered this when analyzing the smell from the mud of the Stiffkey salt marsh on the Norfolk coast in England.

Dimethyl Sulphide aka DMS. The DMS has become well known in scientific circles over the past few decades for its impact on the climate on earth. DMS is a flammable liquid below 38°C. However, it can exist as a gas at lower temperatures.

DMS has a number of industrial applications, from enhancing the flavor of corn in foods to refining oil. This is also one of the main scents of black truffle. Black truffles are “black diamonds” underground. But this scent will quickly disappear when exposed to air.

In marine ecosystems, many organisms can produce DMS gas. Typically, plankton will release DMS when attacked by larger organisms.

Some crustaceans and seabirds can sense DMS even at very low concentrations. And they follow the source of that DMS smell to hunt these larger creatures. Even organisms as small as bacteria release DMS.

In fact, a large amount of DMS gas of about 30–50 million tons/year is emitted from the ocean. This number is large enough to affect the weather. In the atmosphere, DMS gas is converted into other chemicals, stimulating the production of clouds. The clouds can then reflect sunlight and cool the Earth.

DMS isn’t the only ingredient responsible for the smell of sea breezes. Sea breeze includes many other odor-producing factors such as algae, sunscreen products, etc. However, ozone is not one of them.

While it doesn’t contain the rumored ozone gas, scientists have confirmed that breathing in the sea air or spending time relaxing at the beach has many physical and mental health benefits. Besides, in addition to improving lung function, bathing can also reduce the symptoms of some dermatological diseases such as eczema.

Benefits for the lungs

Sea air improves lung function, thins mucus, and relieves cough in people with lung disease or respiratory problems. The reason is because sea air contains microscopic sea water droplets consisting of salt, iodine and magnesium. These microscopic water droplets, when entering the lungs, stimulate the immune system and remove dirt in the lungs.

Skin benefits

In moderation, salt water can be a great beauty aid for the skin. Sea water contains salt that helps to detoxify the skin, reduce swelling, treat wounds, clean the skin and balance the pH. Sea water also contains magnesium, which helps to plump and hydrate the skin.

Mental health benefits

Science has proven that the ocean has calming, healing, and restorative effects. Bathing in the sea has a calming effect on mood and improves mental health. The undulation of the ocean waves has an impact on hearing and sight, bringing the mind into a meditative state. When combined with the warmth from the sun, and the fresh air of the sea, your spirit will be soothed.
