Steve Young: “Goofball question” that Kyle Shanahan is to blame for Trey Lance’s injury

There have been conflicting views on whether 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is responsible for Trey Lance’s injury, who will miss the remainder of the 2022 NFL season after breaking his ankle.

Many people blame Shanahan for Lance’s injury, but former 49ers great Steve Young thinks that responsibility shouldn’t be placed there.

On “Tolbert & Copes” on KNBR 680 on Thursday, Young stated that it is risky to run quarterbacks out of the huddle in football. “Recall Trey played against the Cardinals last year; I believe Shanahan ran him out of the huddle 13 times.

We all kind of [asked] ourselves, “Really, is that what we’re doing?”

Furthermore, Young claims that the 49ers may have misjudged Lance’s running prowess due to the fact that he has received so few carries in the NFL.

Young stated, “Running him was supposed to be the plan. Trey, there are guys that can run because they know how to get down and get out of difficulty, and then there are guys who don’t.

Young also defended Shanahan’s play call, claiming that people who are criticizing him are asking “goofball questions.”

Young said, “We thought he was that person. “And I think they thought Trey could pull off such a great run for Trey Lance. I suppose that’s part of the arrangement.”

Young continued by stating that the coaching staff of the 49ers might need to reconsider their use of Lance given the outcome of this particular play.

“My point is that as we learn more, we might determine that Trey isn’t actually comfortable doing it when he returns to the field in the future. But wasn’t that a condition of the agreement we reached with Trey—that we trusted him to be a person capable of doing that—?” Young summed up.

Up until the young quarterback can silence his detractors, questions regarding Lance’s ability to run will continue to be asked for the rest of the season and beyond.

However, with a fired-up Jimmy Garoppolo back at the helm and in charge of the team, perhaps those concerns will momentarily go away and leave Lance the room to continue his recovery in peace.
