Sam Querrey will never forget his impressive victory over Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic. He hasn’t had time to consider what playing tennis professionally will make him miss the most.

Sam Querrey leaves the US Open after his first-round defeat

The US Open has become a place where players announce their retirement, and Californian Querrey, 34, lost his final match on Tuesday night at Court 7 against Belarusian Ilya Ivashka by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8), and 6-3. In the ATP rankings, Querrey peaked at No. 11.

He defeated No. 1 Murray in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2016 and No. 1 Djokovic in the semifinals in 2017. He also made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2019. Querrey, a father of two sons, claimed he had been considering terminating his career for roughly six months before deciding to quit at Flushing Meadows six weeks ago.

“I accepted it and moved on. And that felt wonderful “added Querrey. Just mentally, the past six weeks have been quite enjoyable. About 15 friends and family members, according to him, were present on Tuesday. What will happen after that? He remained silent. Still not. Querrey stated, “There’s something I’m working on. I’ll have news soon.”
