In its second upset over Virginia Tech in four years, Old Dominion succeeds

Virginia Tech was defeated 20-17 by Old Dominion on the road for the second time in four years. To celebrate Old Dominion’s second victory over a Power 5 team, fans flocked to the field. A 49-35 victory over the Hokies occurred in the first game in 2018.

Brent Pry, the head coach of Virginia Tech for the first time, did not exactly want the season to begin this way. Five turnovers by the Hokies resulted in 17 points for Old Dominion. The most significant occurred with 2:58 left to play. With 17 seconds left, Blake Watson scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run after quarterback Grant Wells had thrown an interception.

In addition, the Hokies ran 121 yards for 15 penalties. Wells started the game for Virginia Tech and completed 21 of 36 passes for 197 yards and a score while tossing four interceptions. They wanted to play hard and make plays, but I believe they pressed too much and were sloppy, according to Pry.

Once the coaches were able to exit the elevator, they had to sprint up the six flights of stairs to their respective boxes. That could serve as a fitting metaphor for what happened in the second half. However, this will not be the last time the two schools interact. As of right now, they are expected to play every year through 2031, with four of those matches taking place at Old Dominion.
