Falcons Draft Shocker: Michael Penix Jr. Joins Kirk Cousins in Atlanta

Using the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons surprised everyone by selecting outstanding quarterback Michael Penix Jr. of Washington. The move caught everyone off guard in the football world and even created a stir within Kirk Cousins’ camp. Cousins had just inked a big four-year deal with Atlanta. After the selection, Penix acknowledged that he and Cousins had “a very good conversation.” He was excited to collaborate with the seasoned quarterback.

The electrifying Penix guided the Huskies to a stunning National Championship berth and a 14-1 record in 2023. Rome Odunze, a wide receiver with the Chicago Bears (selected ninth overall), and the left-handed gunslinger set school passing records together. Heisman Trophy nominee Rome Odunze earned the coveted Maxwell Award to top off his senior year.

The selection was made with the future in mind, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot stressed: “This wasn’t forced. Penix has our utmost confidence as a future franchise star. We took action right away for that reason.”

The rookie is gaining from Cousins’ mentoring, according to coach Raheem Morris: “Kirk is an incredible role model for Michael. It’s a wonderful chance to pick the brain of an actual expert.”

Despite having a torn Achilles, my 35-year-old cousin is still productive. Atlanta obviously believes in Cousins, but selecting Penix might cause some trouble in the quarterback room.

Penix appears intent on blending in. “I’m here to help this team win in any way possible,” he stated. Kirk is a fantastic man. It’s a blessing for me to collaborate with and gain knowledge from him.”
