At the conclusion of WWII, men and women returned home from Asia, with many passing via Hawai’i. They returned wearing these bright jerseys on their backs. These shirts were a promise of lighter days ahead after a long and dismal period.
5 things that happened in the 1940s and 1950s that made the aloha shirt common in the mid-60s
Aloha Week was founded in 1946. A yearly celebration of Hawaii’s unique culture, dance, and music, with a variety of activities. Aloha Week now draws an average of over 100,000 visitors. Assistance from A-list celebrities – Astronauts aboard NASA’s 26th space shuttle mission joined in the celebrations in 1988. In the 1930s, Bing Crosby and in the 1950s, Duke Kahanamoku, the famous Hawaiian Olympian, increased the shirt’s visibility. Then, in 1953, the picture From Here to Eternity brought Ernest Borgnine, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra to prominence. Not to mention Elvis Presley, who donned numerous Aloha Shirts while performing and singing on the Waikiki sands in the 1961 classic film Blue Hawai’i. Furthermore, two presidents at the time, Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, enhanced international awareness of Aloha Shirts by wearing them in public. Mickey and Minnie Mouse wore Aloha Shirts when they were in the mood.
In 1959, Hawai’i became the 50th state, and California surfers returned home wearing their brilliantly coloured shirts and board shorts, boosting the popularity of The Aloha Shirt. Despite the fact that President Harry Truman’s presidency ended in 1953, he and his team helped to the growth of Hawaii’s fashion industry. In this photo, most of his workers, including the president, were dressed in fantastic Aloha Shirts.
In 1946, the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce received a request to wear more lightweight apparel during the summer months. Aloha Shirts and Aloha Wear made their way into the office during the summer. Then there was Aloha Friday, which made its debut in 1960. Everyone was allowed to come to work dressed informally on Fridays (what became known as Aloha Wear). On the mainland, this became known as Casual Friday. Aloha Shirts and Dresses made their debut as uniforms for the military.

- The Hawaiian Fashion Guild sent each member of the State of Hawai’i House of Representatives and Senate two aloha shirts as part of Operation Liberation, which helped popularize Aloha Friday.
- It’s Aloha Friday, and there won’t be any work until Monday…
- Listen Here Regrettably, like with so many things in the 1980s and 1990s….
The Aloha Shirt’s immense popularity, on the other hand, proved to be its undoing. Due of low-cost offshore production, Hawaiian firms failed to compete. The low-cost imports were available at Costco and Walmart, as well as other big-box stores. These knock-off shirts were discovered all across the country, including in Hawai’i, with the original designs brazenly duplicated. They were also made of awful synthetic fibres, which just added to the misery. In comparison to the original designs, synthetics like as nylon and polyester were scratchy and uncomfortable. As a result, the outstanding reputation of the original Hawaiian Shirt was further degraded.
