Following the presentation and offer from Shoes, I went to Converse and adidas to see what they might come up with in response. Jordan had been offered $100,000 per year by Converse. “Jordan even approached a Converse rep that he knew, telling the rep that his business ‘simply had to get close’ to the Nike offer,” author Roland Lazenby stated in Michael Jordan: The Life.

Sneakers were both unwilling to provide anything close to the treatment that Sonny Vaccaro had envisioned for MJ.” The sneakers contract was signed, and the shoes, to be known as Air Jordan, were put into production (“Prime Time” was another option that never panned out).
Jordan receives royalties for every Air Jordan sneaker sold (initially $65 a pair) in addition to the $2.5 million over five years. In the first two months, Nike sold $70 million worth of Air Jordans. Jordan noted in the lead-up to his first season, “I know everyone’s eyes are on me.”
“And I’m surprised by some of the things I do.” They don’t always go according to plan. “It just so happens.” Jordan didn’t wear the Air Jordan 1 until the beginning of the 1984-85 season, and his trademark sneaker didn’t hit the shelves until April 1985. Instead, he donned various shades of the shoes Air Ship, a $35 basketball shoe that looks comparable to the Air Jordan 1.
Jordan donned a predominantly black and red Air Ship in a preseason game against the New York Knicks on October 18, 1984, pushing boundaries from the start. The NBA’s “uniformity of uniform” rule, which required players to wear shoes that matched both their team’s uniform and their teammates’ kicks, didn’t sit well with commissioner David Stern
and the league sent Strasser a letter confirming that “the wearing of certain red and black shoes basketball shoes” was prohibited. Jordan would be penalised $5,000 every time he wore a non-color-code-compliant sneaker on the court, according to the story, with the shoes footing the bill.
Jordan’s management was also concerned about the message he was conveying by wearing different colours than the rest of the team. Did he believe he was superior to everyone else? NBA players used white sneakers with one additional colour to match their team’s jersey at the time.
It was a team sport, therefore on-court sneakers couldn’t be too flamboyant. Jordan himself had doubts about the colour scheme of his new shoes. He is alleged to have said, “I can’t wear that sneaker – they are the devil’s colours,” referring to his collegiate team’s loathed local rivals NC State.
Strasser responded, “Unless you can convince the Chicago Bulls to change their colours to Carolina blue, those are going to be your colours.” According to Kris Arnold, a sneaker collector and former ProServ employee, the initial concept was for two primary Air Jordan colorways: a white/black/red colorway for home games (now known as the “Black Toe”) and a black/red colorway for away games (now known as the “Bred”).
Photographer Chuck Kuhn and Jordan shot both colours in Chicago over two days, although the sneakers lacked the traditional Wings emblem. In its place, the sneakers featured a basic “AIR JORDAN” wordmark. Jordan would reproduce a position he’d struck in a LIFE magazine photograph taken by Jacobus Rentmeester in 1984 for this assignment.
The new shot would later become the renowned Jumpman emblem when it was transformed into a silhouetted image. After the Wings logo was finished, it was imprinted on Jordan’s NBA sneakers. The Jumpman would not appear on a sneaker until the Air Jordan 3 in 1988.
Until the Air Jordan 31, the Air Jordan 1 was the only Air Jordan model to include both a Nike Swoosh and the Jordan Wings emblem. Due to the prospect of being punished, Arnold claims that the sneakers were modified with an alternate colorway that complied with NBA requirements.
The “Chicago” colorway has been applied to this model. With all of this going on behind the scenes, Jordan finally stepped onto the floor in the Air Jordan 1 against the Philadelphia 76ers on November 17, 1984. For the rest of the season, he alternated between the Air Ships and the Air Jordan 1s.
In February 1985, Jordan took a chance and wore the black/red Air Jordan 1 for the All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest. Jordan got away with it because it wasn’t an official NBA game. The NBA commissioner’s office issued another letter to Nike on February 25, 1985, after seeing the sneakers, telling them that Jordan could not wear the black/red combination.
shoes went on to make a story out of the “banned” letters, creating interest for Air Jordan and even developing an ad about it (yet failing to mention it was an Air Ship that had set things off).
