The Air Jordan narrative is complicated and full of subtle details. The tale of the man who made the Air Jordan famous grows larger and more amazing with each passing year. As sneaker culture grows into a multibillion-dollar global phenomenon, it’s worth reflecting on how a relatively simple sneaker made of red, white, and black leather influenced everything from basketball to fashion and modern-day marketing.
The AJ High Top’s beginnings – New York Islanders National Hockey League Air Jordan High Top Shoes
Michael Jordan was chosen third overall in the NBA Draft in 1984 by the Chicago Bulls. Big men Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets) and Sam Bowie (Portland Trail Blazers) were chosen ahead of Jordan, owing to teams’ preference for centres over guards at the time. Jordan, the collegiate player of the year, was not mentioned until towards the end of the New York Times’ draught piece.
Jordan was not the top selection, but the Bulls were confident enough in his ability to sign him to a seven-year, $6 million contract, which at the time was the third-largest rookie contract in league history behind Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson.
While the Bulls’ contract negotiations were going on, Nike was working on an agreement with Jordan. Several major players were involved in the negotiations. According to Sonny Vaccaro, a sleazy marketing agent who attracted college basketball coaches to Nike, he convinced Swoosh marketing director Rob Strasser that Jordan was worth signing at any cost.
designer Peter Moore, who created the Air Jordan sneaker design and “Wings” emblem (and also brought us the Nike Dunk), Donald Dell, president of sports management business ProServ, and Jordan’s agent David Falk, who negotiated the Nike deal and worked for ProServ, were among those engaged.
Dell was a former tennis pro, and at the time, tennis players were far more well-known than basketball stars. The ProServ president had oversaw the successful marketing of tennis legends like Stan Smith and Arthur Ashe, and his goal was to do the same with Jordan.
Falk demanded a lot from whichever company wanted to sign the young phenom, thus the negotiations were difficult. Jordan adored adidas and desired to sign with the German behemoth, but the company was in flux following the death of founder Adi Dassler in 1978, and Jordan slipped between the cracks.
Converse was also in the equation, with Jordan wearing the Boston brand’s shoes throughout college thanks to an agreement with North Carolina coach Dean Smith (shown above with Jordan at a press conference). Converse was ready to sell Jordan alongside other stars like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, but it had no new footwear concepts to offer.
Jordan was almost dragged to the company’s presentation in Beaverton, Oregon, because he had no interest. The Swoosh, on the other hand, had the most ambitious and daring plan to set Jordan apart from the rest of the league’s stars. Jordan favoured shoes because their shoes were more comfortable and had a lower profile.
Sneakers was now presenting a brand-new sneaker that was specifically designed for him. It would even go on to accommodate his various shoe sizes (left, size 13; right, size 13.5). In the 1980s, sneaker agreements were nothing like they are now. Big-name athletes didn’t have the same signing power as they do now, and sneaker companies didn’t have the same huge resources. Vaccaro was the one who encouraged Strasser and Jordan to offer him $500,000 per year for five years, a deal that dwarfed the next-largest sponsorship arrangement.
