For vacationers and partygoers alike, iconic hawaiian shirts will always be a go-to. (because nothing says “i’m ready to have a good time” like a bright, tropical print!) close relative “palm prints,” which have become one of the biggest trends this summer, are my personal favorite.
palm patterns are a little more subdued, with graphics of real palm trees and leaves, but they still have the tropical feel that we associate with hawaiian shirts. of course, the fact that they wear rompers, shoes, and bikinis rather than a man’s button-down adds to the charm factor!
For the love of hawaiian shirt
Palm prints are totally up my fashion alley because i live in florida and love all things tropical and nautical. this style is exemplified by my own shirt (shown above in three different ways), and i’ve picked together some additional methods to achieve it on a budget below. (that first romper is begging to be worn!!)
Would you ever wear something with a palm print on it? which one appeals to you the most?
The aloha shirt is a one-of-a-kind fashion item with a fascinating history.
The aloha shirt, like so many other hawaiian traditions, is steeped in hawaiian culture and history. most folks will experience an irresistible attraction towards hawai’i when they see an aloha shirt. everyone want to travel or return to these enchanted islands at some point in their lives.
The hawaiian shirt was the original name for the aloha shirt. it was founded a century ago, and its golden age was between 1930 and 1950. tourist visits increased from 50,000 to 250,000 each year during this period. to put today’s hawai’i into context, 10.5 million visitors visited in 2019!
Aloha shirts were pre-made or made to order for 95 cents in the early 1930s.
During the early 1930s, the s.s. malolo*, a gorgeous cruise ship, began making frequent excursions from the united states mainland to hawai’i. the ship carried a number of well-known figures, including politicians, movie stars, and others. and, of course, you guessed it… aloha shirts were bought and weared by these early influencers.
The first aloha shirts were dressed in an asian style.
During the development of the aloha shirt, the majority of tailor shops were owned by chinese and japanese immigrants. the original short-sleeved, casual hawaiian shirts were made with traditional, imported textiles from back home in asia, such as kimono silks. the word aloha shirt was trademarked in 1937.
The asian influence began to shift quickly. classic hawaiian images derived from japanese-styled motifs. mt. fuji was replaced with diamond head, and japanese pine trees were replaced with coconut trees. shirts depicting thatched houses, ocean sceneries, surfers, and canoes riding the waves began to appear. bamboo, cranes, and tigers, which typified the early prints from the orient, were quickly replaced by whales, fish, and flowers.
5 THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE 1940S AND 1950S THAT MADE THE ALOHA SHIRT COMMON IN THE MID-60S
At the conclusion of WWII, men and women returned home from Asia, with many passing via Hawai’i. They returned wearing these bright jerseys on their backs. These shirts were a promise of lighter days ahead after a long and dismal period.
In 1946, Aloha Week was established. A yearly celebration of Hawaii’s distinctive culture, dance, and music that includes a wide range of activities. Aloha Week now attracts over 100,000 people on average.
A-list celebrity assistance – In 1988, astronauts on NASA’s 26th space shuttle mission joined in the fun. Bing Crosby in the 1930s and Duke Kahanamoku, the famed Hawaiian Olympian, in the 1950s expanded the shirt’s visibility. Then, in 1953, with the film From Here to Eternity, Ernest Borgnine, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra received a lot of attention.
Not to mention The King, Elvis Presley, who wore many Aloha Shirts while playing and singing on the sands of Waikiki in the 1961 classic film Blue Hawai’i. In addition, by wearing Aloha Shirts in public, two presidents of the time, Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, raised the shirts’ awareness internationally. When Mickey and Minnie Mouse were in the mood, they wore Aloha Shirts as well…
Hawai’i became the 50th state in 1959, and the popularity of The Aloha Shirt grew as California surfers returned home wearing their brightly colored shirts and board shorts. Although President Harry Truman’s stint as president of the United States ended in 1953, he and his staff contributed to the advancement of Hawaii’s fashion sector. Most of his staff, including the president, wore wonderful Aloha Shirts in this photo.
Aloha Friday – In 1946, a request was made to the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce to wear more lightweight clothing during the summer months. During the summer, Aloha Shirts and Aloha Wear made their way into the office. Then came Aloha Friday, which debuted in 1960.
On Fridays, everyone was allowed to arrive to work dressed casually (what became known as Aloha Wear). Later on, this became known as Casual Friday on the mainland. Aloha Shirts and Dresses began to debut as uniforms for Disneyland and other well-known firms at the same time.
The Hawaiian Fashion Guild sent each member of the State of Hawai’i House of Representatives and Senate two aloha shirts as part of Operation Liberation, which helped popularize Aloha Friday.
It’s Aloha Friday, and there won’t be any work until Monday… Listen Here Regrettably, like with so many things in the 1980s and 1990s… However the Aloha Shirt’s enormous popularity became its undoing. Hawaiian manufacturers struggled to compete due to low-cost offshore manufacturing.
Costco and Walmart, as well as other big-box retailers, carried the low-cost imports. The original designs were openly reproduced on these knock-off shirts, which were spotted all across the country, even in Hawai’i. To make matters worse, they were fashioned of dreadful synthetic fibers. Synthetics such as nylon and polyester were scratchy and uncomfortable in comparison to the original designs. The original Hawaiian Shirt’s great reputation was further tarnished as a result of this.
