Furthermore, two presidents at the time, Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, enhanced international awareness of Aloha Shirts by wearing them in public. Mickey and Minnie Mouse wore Aloha Shirts when they were in the mood.

In 1959, Hawai’i became the 50th state, and California surfers returned home wearing their brilliantly coloured shirts and board shorts, boosting the popularity of The Aloha Shirt. Despite the fact that President Harry Truman’s presidency ended in 1953, he and his team helped to the growth of Hawaii’s fashion industry. The low-cost imports were available at Costco and Walmart, as well as other big-box stores. These knock-off shirts were discovered all across the country, including in Hawai’i, with the original designs brazenly duplicated.
