Ansu Fati has always been resilient in the face of difficulties. He has shown it since leaving Guinea at the age of 6 to go to Spain, meet his father and adjust to a new life in Herrera (Seville).

At La Masia academy, Ansu Fati always won the respect of everyone, especially the way he overcame a tibia and fibula injury while playing in cadet B, which kept him out of the game for almost a year.

Now, at 19, the young Barcelona star is entering a pivotal moment in his brief but fascinating career: overcoming a muscle injury in his left leg.

On Monday, Ansu, his family and team met with Barca doctors at the Ciudad Deportiva sports center.

There aren’t too many alternatives. He had to decide whether to have surgery or not.

“I need to think about it ,” explains Ansu Fati. An answer that spanned more than his days in the infirmary over the past two seasons, with 389 treating injuries.

The first person to arrive at Barca’s sports center was Ansu Fati. Then his father, Bori and brother Braima also appeared. The Fati family is accompanied by the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes (Portugal).

The positions were clear. Barca wants the player to undergo surgery (minimum four months off), while the Fati family chooses basic treatment (two months). “But the decision is Ansu’s ,” explained a Barca doctor.

The turning point choice
After being injured in the match against Bilbao last Thursday night in San Mames, Ansu Fati had a meeting with doctor Ricard Pruna and coach Xavi Hernandez.

Barca ‘s agent advised him that the best option was surgery. They explain the experience of Sergi Roberto, who suffered a similar injury and, after performing various treatments without success, ended up having surgery.

As another example, Ousmane Dembele also decided to go to Finland to be treated by specialist Sakari Orava in 2017, when he tore the tendon of his left thigh. Later, Dr. Lasse Lempainen treated him for a similar injury in his right leg.

“This injury can recur,” Lempainen explained after surgery on Dembele in February 2020.

In Fati’s environment, people are constantly thinking about the plight of Dembele – who has struggled with multiple injuries during his nearly five years at Barca.

But basically, they think about the difficulty that Ansu went through when he broke the meniscus in his left knee in November 2020, in the match against Betis. He has undergone four surgeries, missed his EURO 2020 appointment and returned only recently.

Since inheriting the number 10 shirt left by Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati has only played 455 minutes in all competitions and scored 5 goals.

Ansu yearned to compete and was psychologically disturbed by the times he was on the operating table. Therefore, he has not made a definitive decision after meeting with the Barca medical team but needs more time to think. The final decision, however, greatly influenced his much-anticipated career.
